Yamakai is the officially registered name of the cultivar Shizu-7166. The common denominator of all cultivars in the 7000 series is Yabukita as one of the parents.
Yamakai is a cultivar quite rich in umami and its cultivation has spread mainly to shaded teas.
Unfortunately, its extravagant aroma has, I would say unfairly, given it a bad reputation with tea merchants and so this cultivar has become quite rare. Finding an old-fashioned unshaded sencha from Yamakai is quite a challenge today.
Recently there has been a turnaround and the popularity of Yamakai is growing.
If the aroma is what you enjoy about tea, this Yamakai has a good chance of being your favourite tea.
