In the 20th century, scientists and farmers began breeding and identifying the different cultivars of the tea plant. In the days before the rise of cultivars such as Yabukita, Okumidori, Saemidori, etc., only the indigenous Zairai tea trees existed. These tea bushes are grown from seed and each plant has its own distinctive flavour profile. The tea that results from harvesting a tea garden with Zairai tea plants is the same tea that has been drunk in Japan for almost a thousand years.
Setoya is the name of a place in the Fujieda district of Shiziuka Prefecture.
