Traditional bamboo whisk for preparing matcha tea.

Made of dark, more durable bamboo.

80 prones

Chasen (or chasen) is an indispensable tool for the traditional preparation of matcha.

This one is made of light-coloured bamboo and is 11cm long and 80 threads - ideal for home preparation of matcha in usucha style (literally 'thin tea' ) - approximately 2g of matcha is used in usucha (the ideal tool here is chasaku) and the aim is to achieve a rich and beautifully whipped foam.

Handmade from a single piece of selected bamboo - a job that requires precision.

  • Before preparing matcha, we recommend soaking the chasen in water for 20-30 seconds to soften the fibres - the chasen will last longer.
  • Chasen should never be washed with java or similar products.
  • Let the chasen dry after use - ideally on a stand

  • Do I need chasen? Is it possible to prepare matcha without chasen?

Without chasen, you are depriving yourself not only of the ritual preparation but also of the taste experience - leaving aside the inferior varieties intended for cooking, good quality matcha is a very noble and expensive tea that certainly deserves proper handling. The whipped foam not only pleases the eye but also highlights the sweetness contained in the matcha.

What about the shaker?

A shaker is a good tool for making chilled gastro matcha drinks, but for real matcha, you need hot (not boiling) water which is not a friend of the shaker, and it never stirs that good enough in a shaker.

This Chasen is made in China. If you are interested we can also supply a Japanese one, however, the price is about ten times as much.
